Weather Woes

If you live in Missouri then you are aware that the wonderful up and down weather is here yet again. It has been muggy and 80, then 10 minutes later windy and 62. Around here people sum it up with Welcome to Missouri. Well, along with the gigantic weather changes comes storms. These are the sleep altering kind of storms with blinding light and nuclear bomb kind of booming. Tuesday night was one of those nights.
I am not sure exactly what time the rain began. Hubby and I went to bed at about 11 I think. All I remember is that the once dark but suddenly well lit room and boom that followed made me jump almost out of bed. It was the kind that stops you in your tracks, frozen unable to move until you assess the situation. The electric went out immediately and I believe the unusual silence from all white noise in the house caused everyone to hear the next thunder clap. Before either of us could get out of bed #2 was in my room, behind was #3 both murmuring about the noise and dark. I spoke over them both to go ahead and climb in bed. I headed for my cell phone because this storm even seemed to kill the landlines. In fact the speaker phone kicked on with an error message of interrupted service. Thank God for cell phones. I report the service outage like the electric company doesn't know it exists. Cell phones work excellent in place of flashlights, in my house there is never a guarantee the flashlights, all 6 of them, will be where it should or even have working batteries.
Hubby heads downstairs to check on the last of the big 3 who haven't headed to our room. When he gets down there #1 says he will be up in a minute. He took longer because Dad didn't stay with the cell phone light. Truth be told he seemed barely moved by the goings on. The big 3 snuggle in our queen size bed and Dad takes the recliner in the bedroom. It has now been about 30 minutes and I am pretty sure there is little hope of getting any quality sleep tonight. 15 more minutes later, possibly drifting for a moment or two the rain has turned peaceful and the flashes/booms unheard. Still no electric I suggest #1 and #2 head to #1's room where the can sleep together (meaning in bunk bed). It takes a bit of convincing for #2. Once downstairs she literally means sleep together as she climbs to the top bunk. I snug them in saying a quick prayer for rest and head back upstairs. Now hubby and I have the bed back with small #3 semi snoring in the middle.
We all drift to sleep for awhile until another flash and boom happens. #2 yells Mommy and Daddy heads down to sleep in the bottom bunk. Back to sleep for a bit more when the electricity comes back on. The whir of the fan let's us know. I swoop #3 up and take him to his room praying that he wakes little. He tries to engage in conversation but I dismiss and say goodnight. Apparently #1's snoring had caused Daddy and #2 to head to her room. That is where he leaves her safe and sound with music back on. He comes upstairs minutes after I lay back down. It is now 5 am. Wow, amazing how 3 1/2 to 4 hours can feel like forever.
6 am comes quick, shower and off to work hubby heads. I get up at 6:45 knowing that the am will be a challenge. Boy I was soooo right. It is supposed to rain at night for days too. Truth though this the first time that I can remember being in this house and having all the kids in our bed again. It sure was rough but it reminds me how much my kids are growing up!!

  1. DD didn't wake up to those storms but the dog did. Every time those thunder claps happened I had to console the dog. Oy.

Honestly, I can't wait for those nights when our kids climb into our bed.

Sweet story. Hope you have caught up a little on sleep!
