Fired!

Last night we headed out for the first of many ritualistic trips to Softball/Baseball games this year. It was #2's first time playing the real deal (t-ball allows room for every kid to feel like a winner but not softball). She was super excited and unknown to us had a mouthful of gum. Daddy inquired how she had all that gum and her reply, "I sneak candy all the time." He then said well I guess we better hide it all, or better yet sell it on Craig's List. She yelled No and told him he was fired from being her daddy then. Driving in the car allows for conversation where hubby and I can communicate non verbally without the kids seeing. I snickered. He smiled and then said, "Fine, I guess you can get out and walk then." He told her the rest of us were going for ice cream. She knew he was kidding so they bantered back and forth a bit before she added you will have to go marry someone else. I chimed in, "What about me?" #1 replied, "You can marry someone else who is more handsome then daddy." Daddy not wanting to be left out said, "Hey, that's not fair!" #2 added he would marry someone more pretty than me too. #2 then ducked down in the car and said she was gone. Daddy said, "One less kid cool more ice cream for the rest of us." #1 loves discussing life without his siblings or at least #3 and #4 so he contributed, "I still want you to be my Daddy." Sweet words but somehow they still felt externally motivated:) Daddy said, "No you all said I was fired so your mom and I don't have any kids then." He continued, "We will travel, stay out late and have tonssssss of fun," drawn out to seem like a big deal. #2 said "Fine then we all will live with someone else maybe G-ma and G and you guys will have to go somewhere and make more babies." I had remained pretty quiet during this conversation but couldn't hide the laughter now. Daddy shook his head and said, "That isn't gonna happen EVER again!"
The car sure is a hot spot for our family some good, some frustrating and some rewarding. On the way home with a 7 to 3 win, #2 hitting twice and striking out once, plus getting 1 out for her team while playing left field was cause to celebrate for real. DQ was a busy place but sitting in a booth with my whole family seemed like no other place in the world could be better. On the return car ride windows cracked, warm Spring air circling around we laughed together. A chorus of voices could be heard singing Laurie Berkner's songs as well as the infamous Get Get song (#4's fav). I don't think I will ever forget those kinds of moments. Maybe this is the your gonna miss this time....
