Girl lessons

Today was a fun filled day with friends and family. A playdate with baby Michael and Will followed by lunch with my cousin for girl advice and chatting. #4 enjoyed playing at the park too as the weather was pretty close to wonderful. Upon arriving home there were chores and dinner to do, plus discipline to enforce...sadly. But then after that I enjoyed some truly special moments with a couple of my kids.

Every year I make an attempt to "train" using that word loosely, towards running a 5K then half marathon. Each year I make great strides towards this goal and then weather, injury etc impairs my ability to maintain this training. I let it slowly wain until it seems hopeless to start again. Here I am at the point when I determine to not let any of that happen except this time I have a backup plan, take my daughter along this ride with me. Last year we began the couch to 5K as a family of 5 #4 being way too small. But endurance of eldest son and youngest son ended that plan.

Tonight, I asked #2 if she wanted to head out with me. Last night I wouldn't let her as it was nearing dark. #1 wanted to ride his bike along with us too. Since I never say no to him willing to be active I agreed. Off we went armed with 3 ipods and singing our own music side by side. It was quite the picturesc moment. You know one of those times when you look around and make a mental "click". I wish I could bottle these things up so when life gets hard and parenting isn't as much fun it was there in my hands and heart.

Sad part of it all was that my bike rider remained ahead of us both and my all american girl well she stayed right with me never slowing down or complaining. Last year I was always ahead but this year...either I have lost that much endurance or she is getting that much stronger. It is such a good thing that I am competitive and she likewise because if we set a goal together it is sure to happen.

Then arriving home #2 asked if she could take a shower with me. I felt wierd about that but in reality there is no reason to act odd about the human body so off all 3 of us girls went. This of course led to more discussions about puberty, what happens during puberty. Then on to breastfeeding, how that works within the body, shaving legs and armpits and on. Whew, I had no idea a workout would move to this. Once out of the shower I put on my robe as I do every other time and both girls inquired why there were no clothes underneath. Further explanation resulted in them requesting to wear their robes as well. That then concluded the girl lessons until the next time.

I am so grateful I have daughters to share life with me. My sons are pretty priceless too, but having someone to be into the very things I am, that is pretty darn cool!
