hermit crab without his house
Yep, you read that right. One of our hermit crabs is without a home, well the home on his back that is. A bit of back story is that I first delved into this kind of pet when I was teaching elementary school. They were a super easy thing to have and other than rescuing them on a few severely cold snow days they have been the easiest creature to keep. They are even easier than fish cause their tank requires clean out less often. Anyway, #1 got this as his first pet several years ago maybe even at 3 I do believe too. He was super adorable with it, and since #1 and #4 seem to have many similarities in their upbringing she too owns them.

I once was told, or believed that if a hermit crab gets too big for their shell and you do not provide a bigger one they will die. Also, if they leave their shell for a long time they are sick and will die also. But wouldn't you know that seems to be myth or we have an exceptional crab. This one has been without shell for 2 weeks now. It has hid very well in too large shells and refuses to take residence in any of those provided. Since most of you who know me will attest that I am thrifty (a fancy word for cheap), then you will not be surprised that I was holding out for him to get desperate. Yet he clearly is more stubborn than I so today I hope to pick a couple new shells for his liking.
Anyway, I thought you all might find it interesting to see what these things look like without their house. Unless my family is the odd ones in our curiosity and you are not. Happy Saturday!
