When I grow up
As a parent this is a popular conversation for adults and kids to have. I personally knew exactly what I wanted to be from the age of 3 (according to my mother). Considering while in 5th grade I persuaded the neighbor boys to sit in the 100 degree heat at make shift desks and "taught" them during the summer this is probably an obvious fact. I was temporarily distracted along the way with what I call my pipe dream, a homicide detective.I had a lengthy phase where I read crime books down to the gory explanation of blood spatter and more. My associates degree is in Criminology but well, it all really came back to my passion, teaching.
Hubby like me I believe he knew what he wanted. He joined the fire dept at age 15 and that is how he has managed to obtain 28 years of Fire Service. He worked for the Conservation Dept, then grounds at a local school district, then even as an EMT/Security at the Casino waiting out the Fire Dept to finally hire paid employees. He has been there since 2001 I believe and will likely retire there too. I gotta admire his devotion to his dream.
#1 had a conversation with me a several months ago and clarified the following. "I do not want to be an astronaut when I grow up because rockets can blow up and they eat gross food. Not a writer, builder, or firefighter either. Policeman is out because bad guys shoot at you, and chemist because things explode, a doctor has to deal with brains and blood which is gross too. I will however consider a weatherman but will NOT be a storm chaser." He would also like to be a wrecker (as in the person controlling the wrecking ball) because he likes to destroy stuff.
Since that time it all has come together and he is set on being a meteorologist AND an inventor. This way he can make lots of money inventing things but still work somewhere with what he loves weather. I think this is getting closer to the real deal for him. All of his life he has been consumed with weather, not all the time good. But #1 has also been atypical in that only way he could be calmed was by over explaining everything in any situation. Most kids stop listening shortly but not this one, he has to know. He is so very different from all of my children that is no question.
#2 well she reminds me of that song "When I grow up" click here to listen
I am pretty sure if I didn't intervene and make God a focus of our lives she would be exactly this world view! Her exact claim in life is to be famous. A month ago she wanted to be a model and a singer
her first car will be a limo, then the second is a pink limo. Now she sticks with being famous by itself. I am trying to impart that famous people get that way for lots of reasons, God gave her many talents that she could use but first she must seek him. PS She has NOT seen that video :) We are headed to her first ever pageant this coming weekend where she will learn about walking on a stage, speaking confidently and clearly to people and a crowd. I figure my job is to equip her in the path God leads so my all American girl is heading to the next level on this one. Look for the post next week.
#3 well the jury is still out. He loves all things construction, diggers and the like. He loves to mow the grass with/for Daddy. Last weekend he willingly without request retrieved the push mower and did his big brother's job of mowing under the swing set. Whatever he does I am sure it will involve the outdoors. Then there is #4. She may just be her very own version of All american girl too. She is watching everyone and everything, learning faster than lightning travels and strong petite Queen of all things. Whoa to those that try to stand in her path that is for sure!

I can hear #1's voice as I read his lengthy explanation of what he doesn't want to be and why and what he does want to be. Love him and his deep thoughts. Hope #2 hears you and absorbs that a strong relationship with God is more important than any amount of fame.
ReplyDelete#3 & #4 - Time will tell...look forward to hearing more of their thoughts on this matter in the years ahead.
Hope the pageant was all you hoped it would be and more.
Love ya, AmFriend
I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up :)
