Friday the 13th??

Friday morning continued this week's evil plot by the entire world to force me awake prior to 7am. This being the last week of summer for the kids, and a 15min earlier school start time means I must get up at 6:30 every day again. Teary eyed as you are for me, please remember I do work at dispatch at times till midnight or 2am AND the life of a mom to 4 kids is not easy so this is a bummer for me.
Amidst a dead sleep as I can't even remember my husband getting up showering and leaving my 10 year old says, "Mommy a blanket is burning in my room. It fell on the night light. It smells like smoke too." I being not awake and certain that this child is exaggerating say ok get the blanket out then I will check it out in a minute. I tell him to start his room cleanup project before prospective sleep over, which he says ok and disappears.
Possibly 3-5 minutes later an overwhelming smell of burning debris fills my room and I jump out of bed fearing more than just the blanket is on fire. The firefighter in me rears its head processing what to do next. 2 steps out I notice the source of the smell is within my room. #1 brought the blanket to me. Nightlight still sizzling and flame less burning of material spreads a bit more. I beeline to the outdoors hoping to get rid of this horrible odor. Once outside I examine a bit more and then leave it for a later lesson in safety.
Back inside it is hardly difficult to trace the origin of the smell. It is wafting up the stairs and chokes you the closer you get to #1's room. Opening windows, stripping the not 1 but 2 beds (bunk beds) in his room, sorting smelly and non smelly animals and on fills up a good hour of my time. This begins the cleaning of the whole house, 6 loads of wash, horse lessons, lunch for 6, grocery store run and various other errands for the day. At this moment more than 24 hours later the offensive odor lingers in his room alone. Hubby and I are hopeful that it will continue to lesson over time.
It wasn't until now that I even thought about yesterday being Friday the 13th. During horse lessons another challenging moment of the golf cart key getting lost forcing all activities to stop for the 8 of us (kids, me and G-ma) until it was found. Much effort that is and some steadfast faith mixed with prayers. I choose not to be superstitious and say the date on the calendar was the cause of the confusion. Instead I know that the devil comes to kill steal and destroy any chance he gets. But my God is bigger than all that and we will prevail through it all. I am just glad the kids got to learn something from it all and see grownups seeking him too.
Now, for the rest of you. Take note on where your children have their nightlight as #1 is old enough to move it without our knowledge and observation. Safety is always in our bedtime prayers. You too can prevent house fires:)
Love that he brought you the blanket with the still sizzling night light.
ReplyDeletenever even occurred to me that a night light could be dangerous. I'm glad you made this post a lesson learned for us all i believe.
