A blast from the past and young girl crushes
This weekend while #2 had her better late than never bash I got a window into my daughter and her friend's lives. I knew the day would come where I listen more and talk less but well at age 9 I didn't think it would be quite like this. You see my sweet little girl is more than into boys. Evesdropping upon her and cousin/friends I am sure it doesn't include even holding hands YET. But well, boys are not icky and the wonder of a kiss is eminent.
During lunch we/they discussed divorce (my daughter shielded as in only one close relative has been through one and they both still come to all family functions). This was a careful conversation as her friend has divorced and remarried parents. Next, more like a revolving conversation it changed to the girls and their "crushes". #2 is for David as it seems has been for close to a year, apparently her friends were even in a fight for a short time over the same boy too. Sheesh, so early for all this stuff don't ya think? While on the bus at the field trip today this extended to telling the prospective crush the friend liked them, shoving each other playfully on and off the path and more. I am ok with this part I suppose but all too soon it shall shift. I think 5th grade was the beginning of my interest in kissing, 6th for my first kiss. Oddly enough his name was Mike too.
The girls chattered about how many boyfriends or girlfriends their parents had, never once asking me for a number. I honestly cannot count how many boys I dated once upon a time. I did include the info that hubby dated not a single person but me. It was a sweet anecdote to their astonishment of Emily's dad having a whopping 11 girlfriends..eek if that is truly a huge number!
All I do know is that I have 3 past "boyfriends" on my Facebook friends list. Of those one was more of a best friend than the ever so short time we dated, another was one (if not my only first love), and the last a two time relationship where he went on to a whole new life and me my own way. But yet he returned back looking for me and seeing where I was at as if I made a mark on his life too. You ever feel like you remember people in ways that affect you and they think of you as nonexistent in life?
I don't mean anything off or crazy here. I am not looking to replace my husband or get into an inappropriate place. But I went through my teenage years caring about the relationships I made. It sure is nice to know that people remember you in a positive way too right?
Needless to say we have been chatting about getting together with our families and catching up for months now. He is in the service my state side mostly but still is here and there. It will happen eventually and I am sure hubby will like him since they do have a good deal in common. But today he sent me a message with the link to a surprise he has been working on for me. When I first got it I was impressed and thought it was terribly sweet. I mentioned recently that I had my old keyboard up and running but the song he recorded on it for me was lost long ago as he has been working on his playing skills.
I was surprised when I listened to his beautiful song, but even more when the message with it said he hadn't forgotten when I gave him the music to this song. click here to play
HA! I did dump him for a ridiculous boy, an athesist no less, that did not make it a matter of a month. But he still was there when I woke up to that choice, and again near graduation too. Eventually my back and forth got the best of him and he moved on (I think I was ok with it since I was indecisive about my own life too). But I sure never remember giving him this song. I probably did though. Music has always been my passion, my release for all that ails me. I love that he remembered though because well, it is good to hear that I meant something to people who meant something to me. Or maybe he likes remembering that I wanted him more than he me at sometime. Either way, my past reflections help me prioritize the present and stay in touch with where my kids are headed.
I pray my kids make this kind of relationships with those they choose to date. I pray that these memories help me see them from where they are at and not from my current age. I pray that the choices I make continue to touch the lives of the people I know in the best darn way possible!
