Another mom's power of suggestion
Many of you are aware that I despise cooking. Yes, loathe would maybe even be a better word. I gladly will shop for the food, organize it in the pantry and fridge and even browse cooking magazine for ideas. But when it comes to the actual stand in the kitchen prep work no way! Why I gladly will clean up the kitchen each night too just don't make me cook it! No idea why I feel that way, nothing traumatic happened. My mother didn't really even teach me much because I must have had a horrible attitude in each attempt.
Being a member of a local mom's website means I am bombarded with the carrying points of views and ideas from other mothers. There is no booklet for raising kids, and well many of us have things we strive to do different than our parents, with similar things to do too. My goal in this job has simply been to equip my kids with all they need in the bent God made them for success. Each of their success are different too but basic skills are required of all people alike. Recently one mom asked what can your kids cook. Huh, cook really? Well, popcorn is easy for all of them (when I say all I mean the big 3 #4 will get there soon enough). Reheating foods is pretty safe bet for all especially #1 who frequently makes his "famous nachos". Making sandwiches and items that don't require cooking are definite too. The oven and the stove are things I have never taught any of them. They all have helped make cookies, brownies and the like but they only did what I said not from start to finish. It was a valid point for me, I really hadn't thought about instructing them to become self sufficient in this area, point taken and considered.
This was not the first time the capability of my kids was underestimated. When #1 was 6 or 7 I believe my sis in the law remarked how she felt her daughter (my niece referred to here as K and is 1 yr younger than him) should be able to take a shower independently. Having 3 small kids at the time I got into the habit of bathing all at once and never stopped to decipher such an idea. That was all it took and within a year I had all of the 3 independent. Poor #3 has to do everything early while #1 is late. Big families tend to do that I think.
Tonight we made homemade pizza in 3 parts and each had their role. I shall build on this so eventually they will be making me dinner. Now there is motivation right there, get one of them to love to cook. ~Aha~
